Australia v. England

Australia v England Test Series 2013/14

Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne: Thursday 26 December 2013 10:30 (day 4 of 5)

Toss: Australia won the toss and elected to bowl.

Result: Australia win by 8 wickets

Australia 2nd innings

End of Over 52 (4 runs)
Bowler: Monty Panesar
Australia: 231-2 (rr 4.44)

51.5
Two Runs
Panesar to Watson. Stock length ball, middle stump down the track sweeping, well timed to deep mid wicket for 2 runs. That's it. Watson came down the wicket and muscled the ball through the legside. The ball went to the fence but the batsmen had completed the two runs required to win the game before then.

England only had a small chance of victory today on a flat pitch but they didn't help their cause by dropping catches. Chris Rogers made the most of his reprieve to go to his second Test century. He played with great flair in front of his home crowd. Rogers set the victory up and Shane Watson was able to come in and play in the aggressive manner he likes. He helped himself to 83 not out as Australia romped into a 4-0 lead. Mitchell Johnson takes his thrid man of the match award of the series.

Where do England go from here? They have been outplayed in all facets of the game. Their batsmen have struggled under pressure. They have dropped catches and their bowlers have been unable to achieve any lateral movement. They go to Sydney for the New Year Test and it will take a remarkable turnaround to prevent a 5-0 series whitewash.
