ECB's Mike Gatting is among the star names turning out in a Twenty20 match to mark the opening of Lisvane CC's new pavilion following the fantastic year-long efforts to rejuvenate their St Mellons ground.

The match starts at 5.30pm on July 7 at Llywnarthen Ground, Pascal Close, St Mellons. There is a gate donation of £3 adults, £1 kids – which includes a Souvenir Programme and drink.

Early in 2008, Lisvane secured a permanent home by taking on the disused Cardiff YMCA cricket ground at St Mellons. Last used in 2002, the picturesque ground, pavilion and changing rooms were in a sad state of disrepair, and to bring them to an acceptable standard, considerable work was necessary.

To kick-start the initiative, Lisvane CC enrolled in the ECB NatWest CricketForce programme and was a showcase club in 2008.

ECB awarded Lisvane CC a NatWest OSCA for its CricketForce achievements and Gatting made a commitment to play in a match to help celebrate this.

To fund the pavilion building and refurbishment, the club was granted loans by the ECB. To repay these loans, they have various fund-raising efforts underway including the celebrity match.

The combination of the proximity to the England v Australia npower Ashes Test on the next day, the committed participation of Gatting, Steve James, Ieuan Evans and other celebrities, and Lisvane’s own community-based story has generated great interest locally.

Here are some of the things the club has achieved in the last 18 months:

  • joined up two old buildings and totally re-fitted the interior
  • installed a pitched roof & patched the exposed render
  • painted the exterior walls & redecorated the interior
  • completed weed control, prepared and cultivated the square
  • laid pavers outside the pavilion and on the patio area
  • laid a new pathway to the pavilion from the car park
  • formed, painted & installed picket fencing
  • replaced the main entrance gate
  • cleared rocks, debris and litter from the ground perimeter

The club was founded some 30 years ago by Tim Mathias and Bill Ricketts in a meeting at the Black Griffin Inn in Lisvane. Up until 2008, Lisvane CC never benefited from having its own ground.

Despite this handicap, the Club flourished, and now has over 250 members, fielding four senior sides, and a growing junior section of nine teams playing league cricket, at under 9, 11, 13, 15 and 17 levels, plus a girls team.

Thanks to this contribution to the community, they were awarded the highly prestigious ECB Clubmark accreditation in 2008.
