Setting the standard
Wirksworth crowned an excellent 2008 by winning the Derbyshire Dales Sports Club of the Year award.
The club were rewarded for some fine work which focused on their attention to young people in cricket, personal development and leadership, all of which was linked in with the ECB's Chance to shine programme.
Despite being already actively involved in the community, Wirksworth became an official member of the Chance to shine initiative which aims to regenerate cricket in state schools.
As a result, the club, through young club coach Charlotte Horton, provides coaching in nine primary schools as well as the Anthony Gell School.
They also arranged three Kwik Cricket festivals for local schools and hold weekly 'Come & Play Kwik' sessions for under-11s which has run successfully for a decade.
Wirksworth are thriving and, being a focus club with clubmark recognition, are an example to all.
As well as running three senior league teams - ten players who turned out for the first XI in 2008 graduated through the youth system - the club run junior teams for under-12s, under-13s and under-15s as well as boys and girls' Kwik Cricket teams.
