Gale thrilled with England call-up

Jonathan Gale talked to ecb.co.uk about next month's tour of South Africa

Surrey’s Jonathan Gale admits he was shocked to be selected in the England Learning Disabilities squad for next month’s Tri-Nations tournament in South Africa.

Gale is one of six new faces in a 14-man squad, led by wicketkeeper Gavin Randall, that will play four 40-over matches against South Africa and Australia, with the two teams who amass the most points playing in the tournament final.

Asked for his reaction to his call-up, Gale told ecb.co.uk: “Delighted and honoured. I never thought I would get picked to go for it.

“There was a bit of nerves as I thought I maybe wasn’t quite ready for the tour, but I’m very happy at the end of the day.

“I’m sure, as I am, the other debutants will be very excited. It (the number of uncapped players) is a bit of a shock.”

Gale revealed his joy at gaining a place in the touring party was matched by his family and friends.

“As soon as I was out of the training I was straight away on the phone to all of my family and friends, who have been supporting me all of the time, just to tell them the great news which I’m very thankful for,” he explained.

“They had the same reaction as me, they were maybe more delighted if anything. Especially my dad, who has taken me to all the training sessions and matches in the last 18 months.”

With preparations for the tour already under way, Gale is now aiming to keep a lid on his emotions.

“I’m still trying to calm down a bit over the excitement that’s still to come, but that will come in good time,” he added.

“I want to do the best I can and just enjoy it really.”
