Umesh Valjee continued his remarkable year when he won the Achievement Through Adversity at the GGS Asian Leadership Awards in London.

The England Deaf captain, who just days before won the Deaf Sports Personality of the Year Award, was again recognised for his achievements in the sport.

“He has never let his disability get the better of him," said Ian Martin, National Disabilities Manager.

"Umesh is deaf but his talent, determination and sheer skill have seen him become captain of the England Deaf team, leading the side since 1995 with huge distinction.

"Among the highlights of a brilliant career was hitting three centuries in the first four innings on a tour of Australia and England have enjoyed amazing victories at home and abroad under his leadership."

At the beginning of the year Valjee was awarded an MBE in the Queen's New Year's honours list for his services to deaf cricket.
