Fielding Drills

We'll be adding regular fielding drills here - with illustratve graphics and explanatory text to accompany each one.

Run Out Game

This week it’s a quick and simple drill that tests fielders' ability on the one hand intercept, but also is excellent for developing batters' technique running between the wickets.

Tinker around with the distances so batters have to run flat out to beat the fielders attacking the ball. By quietly rolling the ball out at different paces and angles the coach should be able to get a thrilling finish from this game. A good game always finishes as a tie!

You can split any size group into two teams. One team take it in turns to run to a crease (suggested 12 metres away) and back.

The other team field the rolling ball and return it to the coach, attempting to execute a run out. By shouting out the score, as well as the various technical points, coaches can easily generate a good competitive spirit amongst the group.

Three key coaching points for the fielding team:

  • Attack the ball fast and low to the ground
  • Keep your eye on the ball until it is safely in the hand
  • Keep the head and momentum towards the target (which is the coach's hands just above the stumps)

Three key coaching points for the batting team:

  • Between runs turn so you are always facing the ball
  • Carry the bat across your body with two hands enabling a well balanced sprint
  • Only run minimal distances and stretch for the crease with the bat
