Harrow set for CricketForce revival

Andrew Strauss

It is hoped that England captain Andrew Strauss will be among the many to help out at Harrow St Mary's CC in March

Harrow St Mary's CC have been confirmed as one of only three clubs to be selected as a national showcase club for the 2010 NatWest CricketForce.

An ECB initiative, CricketForce encourages cricket supporters and their friends and families to give something back to their local community club by volunteering to undertake major renovations to clubhouses and grounds.

This year’s event, taking place over the weekend of March 26-28 and covered extensively on Sky TV, will be opened by Harrow St Mary’s at their Old Millhillans ground.

At the launch in Harrow Hotel, former England seamer Angus Fraser, now Middlesex managing director, pledged that members of the Middlesex squad, hopefully including Andrew Strauss and Adam Gilchrist, will don the gardening gloves and pitch in with the renovation.

The weekend stands to prove momentous in the history and development of HSM and their new ground at Old Mills.

The club plan a total refurbishment of the main pavilion, a new scoreboard, brand new net facilities and an artificial track for their much-vaunted colts section, which has 14 players involved with Middlesex age-group levels.

HSM left the Harrow Recreation Ground after 125 years last summer. Whilst the ‘Rec’ had been home for more than a century to the club, inadequate facilities were holding back the club’s development.

HSM secretary Lesley Brown said: “Moving from playing in a public park to play in our own secure and safe ground is a wonderful opportunity for our club to reward our players and members with the facilities that other clubs have always taken for granted.

“We welcome the local community to take this opportunity to also get involved.”
