Crowning glory for college

Watch our video from Crown Hills Community College where building work is set to begin

Cricket-mad pupils at Crown Hills Community College will be batting and bowling in a new state-of-the-art sports hall thanks to an £800,000 grant aid contribution from the ECB.

The Leicester-based school is preparing for a complete rebuild and part of that will include a cricket specific sports hall, which will be available for both pupils and members of the local community.

"It will be an excellent facility," said ECB regional funding & facilities manager (Midlands) John Huband.

"It will be six lanes with a lot of room inside it. In cricket terms it will be state-of-the-art. We are investing heavily in the flooring, the lighting, the viewing capacity for the hall - it will give a great opportunity for children during curriculum time but out of that, recreational cricketers and the Leicestershire & Rutland Cricket Board will be using it for indoor cricket.

"We see great benefits for this community. It gives a great start for anybody wanting to play the game."

College principal Bernie Green added that the sports hall would provide a huge boost for the pupils.

"It's going to be a fantastic facility," she said. "It's going to be one of the best cricket facilities in the area if not the country.

"In terms of developing sport, PE and physical fitness, it will be amazing because we will be able to offer so much more than we currently do. The new facility will give us the opportunity to offer all kinds of different sports and to involve children and people from the community.

"Children in this area love cricket - you see them playing it in the streets. In the summer you'll see lots of ad hoc cricket games going on all over the field here, so to have a bespoke cricket facility where they can practise the game and up their skills will be fantastic."
