England trio do their bit
England players Chris Tremlett, Charlotte Edwards and Lydia Greenway were three of the stars helping with NatWest CricketForce at Merstham Cricket Club near Reigate in Surrey yesterday.
England fast bowler Tremlett, who is recovering from back surgery, and England women captain Edwards, recently returned from an all-conquering tour of New Zealand, were among several hundred volunteers aiming to spruce up the club.
Merstham was one of a record 1,930 clubs taking part in the annual three-day initiative.
Tremlett told ecb.co.uk: “I went to a couple of these days last year and it was just amazing really the turnaround in how the club was looking at the start of the day and to the end of the day.
“It’s fantastic to see everyone getting involved and their hands dirty and just improving the club and the spirit in the community. I think these days help get everyone together and come together.
“Maybe people who haven’t been down before can come and then watch the cricket in the summer, even if they’re not playing but just come down [and be involved] in other areas as well.
Edwards added: “Your first experience of cricket is at a club and you want a good experience for your first experience.
“I spent all my summers at the local cricket club, and that’s where you learn the game and that’s where you feel comfortable and you socialise.
“And it’s just so nice if you have good facilities, like nets and the club area’s really nice. It looks like it’s going to be really nice in there.
“This was like home for me in the summer so it so important the facilities are good and really welcoming to all.”
