Matlock Cricket Club in Derbyshire wanted to renew their outdated kitchen facilities prior to the 2005 cricket season. However, with time running out before the start of the season and greater financial priorities within the club, they were unable to find anyone who could sponsor the several hundred pounds required to fit the new units, worktops and sink required.
At the end of the season the club committee allocated a modest £250 budget towards the project, after weeks searching the internet on ebay secondhand units and cupboards were secured for a winning bid of £91.00.
A local kitchen retailer - David Watson of Kitchen Lifestyle of Matlock Green - came to the rescue and donated new worktops, sink and taps. David, a Scot, with no great interest in cricket himself, was impressed with the amount of involvement the club has with juniors in the area.
The majority of the kitchen has now been fitted by committee member and parent of two players, Jed Lowe, during evenings and weekends. Andy Kernagan - a local plumber and former player - kindly agreed to connect up the taps and sink.
All that remains is to secure some more materials and complete the tiling and decorating which will be done during the NatWest CricketForce 2006 weekend. The club also plans to reupholster the seating in the tea room and improve the shower facilities in the changing rooms.
All in all the entire project will come in well under budget and will be a vast improvement on the old facilities.
Ebay has proved to be a good source of equipment and revenue for the club, and we are currently trying to sell some old pub tables and chairs and an ice making machine to raise further funds towards NatWest CricketForce.
