Case Study - Arpan Patel
Name: Arpan Patel
Voluntary role: Scorer, Harrow St Mary Cricket Club.
My name is Arpan Patel and I am 24 yeas old. Ever since I was 11, my ambition was to get involved in cricket. I was born with cerebral palsy so I cannot play the game, but I’ve always been interested in cricket commentary and scoring.
I took up the interest in the game through watching it on TV, and over the years I have managed to get a great understanding of the rules and tactics.
Determined to get involved in cricket, I was browsing the web one day and came across the vinspired website, where I applied for vCricket. Knowing that I was really keen to volunteer, ECB gave me an opportunity to take part in NatWest CricketForce and I loved it!
I started on the registration desk, where I recorded all the people taking part in the painting, tidying, cleaning and digging for the event. All the people from the club were so supportive, even with my disability and it was good to be a part of the team and help out.
I also got introduced to a number people who discussed my interests and opportunities in cricket. I got introduced by Lesley Brown (Club Secretary) to the club, and everyone applauded me! I really enjoyed myself and was desperate to get more involved with the club.
The ECB, vCricket and Harrow St Mary CC have given me an opportunity to fulfil one of my ambitions - to be a scorer. I now help out with cricket scoring every weekend where I operate their electronic scoreboard.
I have now completed over 100 hours and everyone is supportive – I have made so many new friends. I now look forward to every weekend, where I get to meet new teams and watch plenty of live cricket, while at the same time helping the game.
I really encourage you to join us through vCricket and get involved in volunteering, just like me!
