Bresnan to open new facility
Harrogate Cricket Club will celebrate the start of a new era as Tim Bresnan officially opens their new £825,000 pavilion on Sunday August 7.
The England and Yorkshire seamer will be on hand to officially open the new pavilion alongside England women’s stars Katherine Brunt and Danielle Hazell who will be representing Yorkshire in a women’s county fixture at St George’s Road on the day.
The dual aspect pavilion replaces a previous building which suffered extensive fire damage three years ago. It will provide players and officials with separate, comfortable changing facilities, refreshment areas and will offer spectators spectacular views over both pitches from the first floor of the new development.
The club was awarded a grant of £500,000 towards the development cost from the England and Wales Cricket Board in partnership with Sport England with members of Harrogate Cricket Club generating the remainder of the funding.
The development of the pavilion and restructuring of the committee has allowed the club to become a hub for the development of women’s cricket in Yorkshire. The club will now become a base for the Yorkshire women’s team and aspires to host international women’s cricket in the future.
Harrogate Cricket Club chairman Steven Culleton said “Since the fire the teams had to change in porta-cabins but now players can enjoy the new pavilion with up-to-date facilities that are accessible to all.
"The large function room, kitchen and meeting rooms are fantastic facilities for the teams and spectators on match days and are available for community use at other times.”
“We are extremely grateful to the ECB and Sport England for their most generous support because we could not afford such a substantial pavilion development from our own resources.
"However, we acknowledge with gratitude the support of the club’s members as the required partnership funding was provided. We regard the grants as an investment in cricket at the club for the future and for the benefit of the local community.”
Sport England’s Director of Property Charles Johnson, said: “The new pavilion will obviously help the Harrogate Cricket Club in the development of cricket and will be welcomed by the home players and visiting teams.
"We are confident that the ECB’s strategic approach to investing in high-quality, sustainable facilities will help cricket to attract and retain many new participants and create more opportunities to develop sporting talent”
ECB National Funding and Facilities Manager Bruce Cruse said: “The ECB is pleased to support this development at Harrogate CC which will give a boost to grass roots cricket in the area and to the development of women’s and girls’ cricket in Yorkshire.
"I am confident as the investment matures cricket locally will go from strength to strength and the facilities will benefit the wider community.”
The official opening will take place at 2pm on Sunday August 7 at Harrogate Cricket Club, St George’s Road, Harrogate, HG2 9BP.
