ECB Chief Executive David Collier today paid tribute to the former England captain Mike Denness OBE whose death at the age of 72 was announced earlier today.

Denness, who captained England in 19 Test matches, was a stylish right-handed batsman who scored more than 25,000 runs in a lengthy first-class career which saw him lead Kent to six domestic trophy wins and also win two competitions as a player with Essex.

The first Scotsman ever to captain England, he played 28 Test matches in all and also led England as the host nation in the inaugural Cricket World Cup in 1975.

After retiring from cricket in 1980, he subsequently fulfilled a variety of roles within cricket including spells as an ICC Match Referee, an ECB Pitch Liaison Officer and more recently as President of Kent County Cricket Club. Earlier this year, he was awarded an OBE in the New Year's Honours List.

ECB Chief Executive David Collier said: "Mike was a man who gave so much to our game in so many different ways as a player, captain, match referee and administrator. I had the honour of working with Mike in my first role in cricket administration at Essex and Mike was a wonderful source of advice and knowledge. He will be sorely missed by all - especially by everyone at Kent.

"All at ECB were delighted to see him receive national recognition for his service to cricket in the recent New Year's Honours list and we send our condolences today to his partner Doreen, immediate family and all his many friends within the first-class game."
