Shahzad rebuked for damaging pitch
An ECB disciplinary panel comprising Judge Edward Slinger (chairman), Ricky Needham and David Smith met today to consider two separate charges against Gloucestershire’s Jon Lewis and Yorkshire’s Ajmal Shahzad.
The charge against Lewis was that during the LV= County Championship match between Essex and Gloucestershire (August 17-20 2011) he deliberately made physical contact with a player of the opposition.
Lewis pleaded guilty to the charge. The panel took into account that three penalty points had already been imposed on Lewis and that Gloucestershire had also taken their own disciplinary action against Lewis in respect of this matter. The panel determined that no further action would be taken.
The charge against Shahzad was that during the championship match between Warwickshire and Yorkshire (August 31-September 3 2011) he deliberately caused avoidable damage to the pitch.
The panel took into account that Shahzad admitted the charge, that he expressed his deep regret, that he had immediately apologised to the umpires and that he had a previous exemplary record. The panel determined that Shahzad should receive a severe reprimand and he was warned as to his future conduct. Shahzad was ordered to pay costs of £750.
