ECB Performance Squad 2007

The England and Wales Cricket Board has announced the 25-man England Performance Squad for this summer’s international season.

The EPS, which has been chosen by the England selectors, consists of 12 players currently on 12-month ECB contacts together with 13 non-contracted players, including the nine non-contracted players who were in the England World Cup 2007 squad.

The other four non-contracted players included in the squad are Graham Onions, Matthew Prior, Owais Shah and Michael Yardy, all of whom were involved in the Academy programme during the winter.

The England head coach, Peter Moores, will be able to withdraw players included in the squad from domestic cricket at his discretion, but as in previous years it is not anticipated that this will lead to a significant reduction in the amount of county cricket played by players not involved in the international programme.

Chairman of selectors David Graveney said: “The England performance squad enables the England head coach working with his support staff and the National Academy staff to monitor more closely the development of international players and better prepare them for the demands of the international game.

“Last year the board agreed that the selectors could name up to 30 players in the EPS but at this stage we have decided to name 25 players.

“Having five spare places in the squad will give us the flexibility to add players who force their way into the England frame through strong performances in county cricket.

“We obviously welcome competition for places in all disciplines and are particularly conscious that the squad is currently light in the area of specialist spin – Ashley Giles has been omitted from the squad at this stage due to his injury but could be added to the squad if he regains match fitness during the season.

“The wicket-keeping position remains a competitive area – Paul Nixon and Matt Prior have been included in the squad but will be aware that they face strong competition from ‘keepers outside of the squad.”

The squad was previously known as the ‘England development squad’ and has been renamed as the ‘England performance squad’ (EPS) as this is felt to be more appropriate terminology for a squad of players, the vast majority of whom have represented England at full international level
