Elworthy appointed to new ECB role

The ECB today announced that Steve Elworthy has been appointed to a new post of director of marketing and communications.

Elworthy, 44, who was the tournament director for both ICC World Twenty20 competitions staged in England last year and in South Africa in 2007, will take up his appointment with immediate effect.

A former international cricketer who played four Tests and 39 one-day internationals for South Africa and also worked for Cricket South Africa as a commercial and communications manager, Elworthy will oversee a 20-strong team responsible for all aspects of the promotion and marketing of cricket from grassroots to international level.

Commenting on the appointment, ECB chief executive David Collier said: “The organisation and planning behind the ICC World T20 tournaments were second to none and a credit to Steve’s professionalism and skill.

“We are delighted to have secured his services as we seek to widen the appeal of the game in this country still further and deliver the best possible service to our key stakeholders, business partners and spectators alike.”

Elworthy said: “It’s an exciting time to take on this role as we look forward to launching a new domestic structure this summer and seek to capitalise on the enormous interest generated by the England men’s team’s Ashes win last year and the England women’s team’s success in two ICC global events.”
