With 20 centuries to his name, including this epic 333 against India at Lord's, Graham Gooch knows all about Test batting

The ECB has announced that the former England captain Graham Gooch will join the England coaching staff on a temporary basis to assist with the team’s preparations ahead of the forthcoming Test series against South Africa.

Gooch, who played 118 Tests for his country and is currently Essex’s batting coach, will work with England’s batsmen in the build-up to the first Test against South Africa at Centurion, starting on December 16.

He is due to fly out to South Africa this weekend and will link up with the England Performance Programme in Pretoria before joining the Test squad at the end of the one-day series.

Hugh Morris, managing director of England cricket, said: "Graham is rightly regarded as one of the best batting coaches in international cricket and we are delighted to have secured his services for a key period of our preparations leading up to the first Test."
