England Under-19s will play two four-day Tests and five one-day internationals versus their South Africa counterparts early next year.

Leicestershire’s Shiv Thakor has been named tour skipper on a trip which will afford opportunities for other players within the squad to captain in matches.

The first Test will be at Sahara Park Newlands, Cape Town, from January 27 and the second at Boland Park, Paarl, from February 3. The first ODI is on February 13 and the last eight days later.

The tour, which runs from January 23 to February 21 2013, is the initial part of the preparation for the Under-19 World Cup in February 2014 and the squad therefore predominantly consists of under-18 and -17 players.

Coach Tim Boon said: "I am really excited about the development opportunities for players selected to tour South Africa in January and February next year to play two four-day Tests and five one-day internationals.

“Shiv Thakor of Leicestershire has been appointed tour captain and is one of three Under-19s players. The squad includes five players with high potential who have graduated from the ECB's Under-17s England Development Programme. The learning curve will be steep with three international series prior to the next ICC Under-19s World Cup in February 2014.

“Four players still eligible for the Under-19s tour have progressed to the Potential EPP Fast Bowlers, with Ben Foakes of Essex a recent graduate from the England Development Programme currently touring India with the England Performance Programme."
