Ashes Walk

The Ashes Walk is a 1000+ mile sponsored walk to all the county cricket grounds, raising money for some very good causes – to give young people a sporting chance.

Funds raised will help regenerate competitive cricket in State schools through The Cricket Foundation Appeal and enable The Lord’s Taverners to provide more opportunities for young people, particularly those with special needs, to enjoy sport and recreation.

When is it?
The walk begins at Hampshire's Rose Bowl on June 13 2005 and finishes on the morning of the
first npower Ashes Test Match at Lord's Cricket Ground on July 21.

Who’s doing it?

Chance To Shine - Mike Gatting
Leading the way will be the President of The Lord's Taverners and England's last successful Ashes captain, Mike Gatting OBE (pictured right with ECB Management Board member Bill Morris at the launch of Chance to shine). Joining him will be celebrities from the world of sport and entertainment.

What can you do?
To make it even more fun we would like you, your family, friends and work-colleagues to join Mike and friends, so that you can help us help young people in your area.

Do we party too?
At the end of each leg there will be a fundraising party organised by The Lord’s Taverners and The Lady Taverners of the area.

At the party you will be able to see a specially commissioned Getty Images Ashes photographic exhibition, with images from Ashes clashes going back to 1880. Also on display will be MCC’s valuable replica Ashes urn.

How do I sign up?
All registered walkers will receive the Ashes Walk cap. There are two opportunities for you to take part in The Lord’s Taverners Ashes Walk:

Long Leg/Fine Leg participants (approx 10 miles each)
Each participant will be encouraged to generate through sponsorship a minimum of £100. We will ask for a donation of £20 on registration (either online or by returning the flyer) and encourage entrants to turn up with a cheque for the balance. Each participant will receive an Ashes Walk T-shirt and cap on arrival at the start point.

Short Leg Participants (2 mile legs)
Each participant will make a £10 donation on registration (children under 18 - £5) and will receive the Ashes Walk cap at the start point. Children must be accompanied on the walk by an adult. Children under 10 may walk free of charge. However, if a child wants a cap, he/she will have to pay £5.
