Vaughan hails Trescothick
Captain Michael Vaughan led the tributes to former England team-mate Marcus Trescothick after he announced his retirement from international cricket.
Trescothick called time on career spanning 76 Tests and 123 one-day internationals due to the stress-related illness which forced him to return home from his last two tours.
His announcement prompted much praise for Trescothick from his former England colleagues, who are currently in New Zealand playing the final Test in Napier.
“On behalf of all the England team, I would like to thank Marcus for his contribution to the team,” said Vaughan.
“He’s been an outstanding performer for England in both formats of the game. He was a pleasure to captain and a terrific influence on the dressing room.
“It is a tough decision for any international cricketer to make. But I believe it’s the right thing for him, and he has my full support as he moves on to the next stage of his county career.
“I know how much Somerset County Cricket Club means to him - and I know he will dedicate his energies to bringing them success.”
England all-rounder Paul Collingwood, who has taken over from Trescothick as vice-captain of the Test side, added: “He was a great team man and a great talent in both forms of the game.
“He’s as close to irreplaceable as you can get. He’s been a big loss to the game, but if this helps him get better then it’s the right decision.”
