Finch unflinching as U19s triumph

Harry Finch carried his bat to a magnificent unbeaten century as England Under-19s claimed a over Bangladesh at Grace Road, their first in three attempts in the Tri-Series.

Seamers Jack Winslade and Matthew Fisher returned impressive figures of 4-39 and 3-28 respectively as the tourists were dismissed for 170 in 42.3 overs.

No Bangladesh batsman reached 50 and, but for a sixth-wicket stand of 69 between captain Mehedy Hasan and Joyraz Sheik, it could have been much worse. Hasan top-scored with 41, while Joyraz contributed 29.

Despite seeing opening partner Ryan Higgins depart for a five-ball duck in the first over of England’s reply, Finch was unfazed and set about constructing an innings of measured and impressive strokeplay.

From the 129th ball he faced, the Sussex player stuck his 12th four to reach 100 not out, leaving Miles Hammond to help himself to the winning runs with three deliveries to spare.

Reflecting on his first U19 international century, Finch said: “It’s brilliant, a fantastic feeling. It probably wouldn’t have meant as much if we hadn’t won there at the end, but I’m just chuffed that we got the win.”

Pakistan, who beat Bangladesh by seven wickets yesterday, lead the group with seven points while the Tigers have three and England two.
