Yorkshire on top despite Evans effort
Laurie Evans stood in the way of Yorkshire seizing complete control on the second day of their LV= County Championship match with champions Warwickshire at Headingley.
At one stage the visitors were struggling on 50 for four in reply to Yorkshire's 302 but Evans erased any prospect of the follow-on with a gritty innings of 88, which helped push his side on to - a deficit of 81.
Liam Plunkett was the pick of the hosts’ attack, celebrating receiving his Yorkshire cap with figures of 4-55.
The Division One leaders began the second day on 294 for nine and they moved swiftly to a third batting bonus point in the opening over from Boyd Rankin when Steve Patterson took a single to cover and Ateeq Javid's wild throw at the stumps resulted in four overthrows.
Last man Jack Brooks raised the 300 with a single off Chris Woakes' first ball but he aimed to hook the fourth and gloved a catch to wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose.
There were three wickets apiece for Woakes and Keith Barker, who was ordered out of the attack on the previous evening for running on to the pitch in his follow through.
Yorkshire were without Azeem Rafiq during the morning, the off-spinner going to hospital for a precautionary X-ray on his left wrist after being struck while batting. He returned to the action in the afternoon with his wrist strapped but only bowled one over.
Ryan Sidebottom soon split Warwickshire's opening pair by trapping Ian Westwood lbw playing across his stumps and a second wicket went down at 36, Plunkett joining the attack to have Will Porterfield splendidly caught by wicketkeeper Andrew Hodd diving high to his left.
Evans joined Varun Chopra but the opener was the first of two batsmen to fall to Patterson with the score on 50. He was lbw for 23 and in the paceman's next over Adam Lyth held a stunning catch at second slip when Ambrose sliced a cut.
Warwickshire limped in to lunch on 55 for four and Woakes played some crisp strokes after the interval until he drove Plunkett tamely to Adil Rashid at cover to bring in Rikki Clarke.
Evans continued his steady progress, completing his half-century off 101 balls with his seventh boundary, at which stage Yorkshire called on Rashid's leg-spin for the first time. And he soon delivered, breaking a 55-run stand for the sixth wicket just before tea by getting Clarke lbw for 24 with a quicker ball.
It was Plunkett who went on to deny Evans a well-merited century, the right-hander attempting to pull a lifting ball but top-edging it to the gully region where Lyth ran round from the slips to grasp the chance.
Ateeq Javid and Barker tried hard to narrow the deficit but with the score 196 the former was tempted to pull at another short ball from Plunkett and gloved through to Hodd.
