Magic Miller keeps Proteas in the hunt

David Miller’s swashbuckling 85 kept South Africa’s hopes alive in their one-day international series against Sri Lanka.

The Proteas headed into the third game of five 2-0 down in the rubber, yet clawed their way back into the contest on the back of Miller’s whirlwind 72-ball knock.

The left-hander struck four fours and five sixes as South Africa racked up 223 for seven to eventually win by .

Such an outcome did not appear on the cards when the tourists slipped to 100 for five.

However, AB de Villiers helped rebuild by compiling a sensible 47 before his lower-order colleague took centre stage to produce a game-changing innings, adding 35 of the 38 runs struck in the last two overs.

Lonwabo Tsotsobe claimed early wickets to immediately derail the hosts, ousting Upul Tharanga, Kumar Sangakkara and Tillakaratne Dilshan.

Mahela Jayawardene and Dinesh Chandimal attempted to steady the ship, showing great patience to hit 24 and 29 respectively.

Thisara Perera then did his best to emulate the efforts of Miller, striking five fours and as many maximums in a 49-delivery 65 - an effort that included pummelling Robin Peterson for 35 in one over, making it the second-most expensive in format history.

However, his efforts ultimately proved in vain as South Africa emerged triumphant with ease; Tsotsobe finished with fine figures of 4-22, while Farhaan Berhadien claimed 3-19.
