Younus puts Pakistan in charge

A splendid unbeaten double-hundred from Younus Khan turned the tables on Zimbabwe in the first of two Tests with Pakistan at Harare.

The hosts ended the penultimate day , chasing 342 for victory after Younus lifted Pakistan to 419 for nine declared in their second innings.

Ninety ahead overnight on 168 for four, Pakistan saw Asad Shafiq bowled by Tendai Chatara in the first over of the morning.

At that point a famous triumph for Zimbabwe appeared likely, yet Younus went on to share 118 with Adnan Akmal, who hit a career-best 64, and an unbroken partnership of 88 with last man Rahat Ali.

When Pakistan’s experienced number four moved to 200 not out from 404 deliveries with his third six, Misbah-ul-Haq opted to call his team in, leaving Rahat undefeated on 35.

After surviving chances on 83 and 117, the previously defensive Younus accelerated in the evening session to hasten Pakistan’s declaration. He has now scored 200 or more four times in Tests, with a top-score of 313 against Sri Lanka in February 2009.

There was a further blow to Zimbabwe prior to stumps when Saeed Ajmal added to his seven first-innings scalps by trapping Tino Mawoyo lbw on a wearing pitch offering increasing turn.
