Adams impresses between showers

Watch highlights of day one

Hampshire captain Jimmy Adams made his third half-century of the season as rain dominated proceedings on day one of their LV= County Championship Division Two clash against Surrey.

The home side came into the match at the top of the division after a win and two draws so far and were 153 for two at stumps, with only 43 overs possible in the day due to the conditions.

Adams made 56 not out and will resume tomorrow with the in-form James Vince, who had contributed 24 in their unbeaten partnership of 49.

Rain delayed the start of play and, when the game eventually got under way at 3pm, Surrey put the home side in.

Jade Dernbach and Stuart Meaker opened the bowling and were containing the openers until Michael Carberry hit the latter for two boundaries in the sixth over.

Carberry was the more attacking of the two men and launched Tom Curran and Matt Dunn for sixes as Hamshire got to 66 without loss.

But he was gone for 35 from the final ball of the 17th over as he edged a Curran delivery to Graeme Smith in the slips.

Surrey spinner Zafar Ansari’s solitary over of the day came in the afternoon session and went for five, including an Adams boundary.

Liam Dawson fell for 19 soon after tea as he was trapped lbw by Meaker and just two overs later the players were off due to a light shower with the score at 112 for two.

They managed to get back out for a further eight overs, giving Adams the chance to move to his fifty off 121 balls with seven fours.
