England Women have been shortlisted for the Sunday Times & Sky Sports Team of the Year award, while Heather Knight is among the contenders for the Sportswoman of the Year gong.
Charlotte Edwards’ side regained the Ashes with a resounding 12 points to four victory over Australia in the maiden multi-format series, drawing the Test before going on to win two of the three one-day internationals and all three of the Twenty20 clashes.
Knight ended the series as the top run-scorer, with 301 to her name including a series-best 157 in the Test when she batted for just short of seven hours and faced 338 deliveries as England claimed a hard-fought share of the points.
She is looking to follow in the footsteps of 2012 winner Jessica Ennis-Hill when the awards are announced live on Sky Sports on Thursday 5 December.
Also on the shortlist are equestrian star Charlotte Dujardin, track cyclist Becky James, 400m runner Christine Ohuruogu, skeleton world champion Shelley Rudman and triathlete Non Stanford.
The team award will see England compete with England netball, Europe’s Solheim Cup winners and the Great Britain team pursuit cycling squad.
The winner of the team award will be decided by the British public, who can cast their vote by logging on to www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/swoty2013 before midnight on Monday 25 November, while a panel of judges will decide the individual awards.
Alex Butler, sports editor for the Sunday Times, commented: “The 2013 shortlist is incredibly strong, with a wide range of team and individual endeavours represented. With Sky Sports involved as co-sponsor and broadcaster of the awards ceremony, the awards have moved to a new level. For the first time, we are inviting the public to vote for their Team of Year via our website.”
Barney Francis, managing director of Sky Sports, added: “Our unrivalled commitment to women’s sport continues this year with, for the first time, live coverage of the Sportswomen of the Year Awards on Sky Sports.
“2013 has been an amazing year for women’s sport and on the fifth of December we look forward to showcasing the talent of the shortlisted nominees and celebrating their success.”
