Babar makes up for lost time

Zulfiqar Babar enjoyed a dream debut as Pakistan defeated West Indies by two wickets in the first of two Twenty20 internationals at Kingstown, St Vincent.

Making his first international appearance at the age of 34, slow left-armer Babar returned figures of 3-23 to help limit the Windies to 152 for seven, but was not finished there.

On strike for the final ball of the match with the scores level, Babar held his nerve and rounded off a fine individual display by striking Marlon Samuels for six over long-off.

Another T20 debutant, Umar Amin, impressed in Pakistan’s chase with 47 off 34 balls, while Shahid Afridi bashed 46 from 27 deliveries and collected his 400th international six before falling in the penultimate over with eight required.

The tourists duly levelled the scores with two balls to spare, but Saeed Ajmal was then run out before Babar finished the game in style.

Shannon Gabriel returned 3-44 from four overs for West Indies, who had earlier reached a competitive total upon choosing to bat thanks to late acceleration from Kieron Pollard and skipper Darren Sammy.

Only 98 runs were on the board when Dwayne Bravo became the fifth batsman to fall - and Babar’s third victim - at the end of the 16th over.

However, Sammy cleared the ropes on three occasions in a 14-ball 30 and Pollard finished unbeaten on 49 from 36.
