Bell replaces Root in World T20 squad

Joe Root remarkably batted on to register a first ODI ton - against West Indies - but his broken thumb has ruled him out of the World Twenty20Injured England batsman Joe Root will miss the World Twenty20 in Bangladesh and is to be replaced by Ian Bell.

Root suffered a broken thumb early in the innings that saw him register a maiden format century in the final one-day international against West Indies in Antigua last week.

The 23-year-old Yorkshireman flew home from the ongoing tour of the Caribbean and, unfortunately, following a consultation with a specialist, he has been ruled out of the tournament that starts later this month.

Bell had already joined the England touring party in Barbados as injury cover and the World T20 event technical committee has approved his inclusion in the tournament squad.

The Warwickshire batsman, 31, has represented his country in the shortest format on seven previous occasions.

England’s opening match of the World T20 is against New Zealand on Saturday 22 March.
