Chapple reign starts eventfully

Watch highlights of day one

Glen Chapple had an eventful first matchday in charge of Lancashire as 18 wickets fell in their LV= County Championship Division One clash with Northamptonshire.

The long-serving captain has been placed in charge for the rest of the season, along with second-team coach Gary Yates, following the departure of new England coach Peter Moores.

Lancashire were put in to bat at Wantage Road and lasted just 44 overs as they were bowled out for 119.

The home side, who were promoted along with their opponents last season, fared a little better and ended the day on 133 for eight as England seamer James Anderson took 5-37.

Lancashire struggled with the bat from the moment they lost opener Paul Horton for a duck in the eighth over.

Of the first nine batsmen, only Chapple with 26 and Luke Procter, who scored 22, reached double figures.

The Red Rose were staring at a two-digit score when they slumped to 80 for nine, so their final total was a recovery of sorts.

Top scorer was number 11 Anderson, who reached 28 before he was bowled by Muhammad Azhar Ullah.

Northants shared the wickets around, Azhar and Steven Crook taking three each, while Olly Stone and Andrew Hall managed two apiece.

Crook was on a hat-trick in the 39th over when he claimed the wickets of Chapple and Kabir Ali, but Anderson fended off the danger.

Anderson and Chapple took the fight to the hosts, and Northants looked in danger of trailing after the first innings when they slipped to 35 of five.

But Ben Duckett and Matthew Spriegel steadied the ship with a partnership of 47 before the former was caught by Horton off Simon Kerrigan for 35.

Spriegel continued to frustrate Lancashire, though, and was unbeaten on 43 at the close to give Northants a lead of 14 runs with two first-innings wickets remaining.
