Coetzer key to Northants victory

Kyle Coetzer's superb unbeaten half-century helped Northants Steelbacks to a comfortable 27-run win over Warwickshire Bears at Wantage Road - the hosts’ second consecutive victory in the Friends Life t20.

The Steelbacks posted a solid 161 for two from their 20 overs, with Scotland captain Coetzer continuing his fine run of form with a 61-ball 71.

Muhammad Azhar Ullah then took 4-25 as the Bears fell short of their target. Ateeq Javid provided the only real resistance with 41 off 34 deliveries.

The Steelbacks won the toss, chose to bat and started in confident fashion in sunny conditions as openers Richard Levi and Coetzer put on 63.

South Africa international Levi clubbed 35 from 21 balls before he was taken at long-on by Chris Woakes off the bowling of Javid.

Coetzer stuck around to go past 50 off 45 deliveries, but Cameron White perished for 28 when he sent New Zealand spinner Jeetan Patel to the grateful hands of Keith Barker at deep midwicket.

Coetzer surpassed his previous best t20 score of 64 when batting out the final five overs of the innings alongside skipper Alex Wakely, who swatted 24 off 17.

Chasing 162, Warwickshire lost Darren Maddy for 15 in the fifth over when his off stump was taken out by Azhar.

Lee Daggett then bowled Bears' captain Varun Chopra for 19 in the following over as the momentum shifted Northants' way.

The visitors suffered another blow when Laurie Evans, who never got going in making six off 15 balls, saw his leg stump sent tumbling by Graeme White.

Rikki Clarke was next to fall, well taken at deep extra cover by Coetzer to give White his second wicket as the Bears fell even further behind the required run-rate.

England all-rounder Chris Woakes made it to 23 off 17 balls before holing out to David Willey at long-on off Azhar.

Daggett then disturbed Javid's middle stump before Azhar bowled Barker and Patel cheaply in the penultimate over. Warwickshire finished on 134 for eight.
