Debutants inspire dominant win

Mohammed Shami’s five-wicket haul complimented Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin's record-breaking partnership as India completed a comprehensive innings-and-51-run victory over West Indies inside three days at Kolkata.

Shami, making his Test debut, completed his five-for and victory by cleaning up Sheldon Cottrell, leaving Shivnarine Chanderpaul stranded on 31 in the first game of the two-match series.

It rounded off an impressive display by the hosts in Sachin Tendulkar’s penultimate appearance. But he was overshadowed as India showed that there is plenty to look forward to after the Little Master departs.

As well as Shami’s heroics with the ball - his 9-118 over the two innings were the second best by an India debutant - Rohit reached 177 on his maiden Test outing - again, the second best return on debut - before being trapped lbw by Veerasammy Permaul.

By then, his partnership with Ashwin had reached a mammoth 280, India’s highest seventh-wicket stand.

Ashwin scored a Test-best 124 before falling to Shane Shillingford - who added Bhuvneshwar Kumar to end with six wickets - as the home side reached 453 all out to give them a lead of 219.

The Windies' response started well, with Chris Gayle, Kieran Powell and Darren Bravo all reaching 30, but once the latter had fallen to leave the score 120 for four, the tourists soon collapsed to 168 all out, with only Chanderpaul going into double figures.

West Indies started the 49th over on 152 for five but ended it 153 for eight. Shami bowled Darren Sammy and Shillingford before Permaul was run out after wandering out of his crease during an lbw appeal, only for Mahendra Singh Dhoni's quick-thinking and direct hit to send the lower-order batsman on his way.

After Ashwin sent Tino Best packing - his third wicket of the innings - Shami rounded off his dream performance.
