Downpours halt Durham charge

Watch highlights of day three

Sussex's hopes of a LV= County Championship Division One win over Durham were hit by rain on the penultimate day at the County Ground.

The hosts declared on their overnight total of 505 for nine, putting Durham into bat on day three, but just 45 overs were possible due to showers.

Durham reached 137 for two when proceedings were brought to a halt, 368 runs behind with eight wickets in hand.

Scott Borthwick was 84 not out with Kumar Sangakkara unbeaten on 30.

The day's play began on time despite a few drops of rain and things appeared promising for Sussex when they claimed a wicket in the second over.

Mark Stoneman was caught behind by Ben Brown off James Anyon, having scored just a single.

Just 28 balls were possible before rain brought a temporary halt to proceedings for the first time.

After a 20-minute delay Durham returned to the middle but swiftly lost another wicket. A mix-up saw Keaton Jennings run out by Luke Wright for 13, with Borthwick culpable.

The number three set about making amends amid the rain delays. Borthwick reached his half-century before an early lunch, with Durham on 81 for two.

He and Sangakkara continued to lead the visitors' recovery on an afternoon punctuated by showers, the pair reaching a century partnership before tea was also taken early.

The day's play was abandoned before 6pm.
