Durham defence up and running

Watch highlights of day one

Durham got the defence of their LV= County Championship title off to a steady start on day one of their opening match against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road.

Northants were promoted as Division Two runners-up last season and could not have been handed a much tougher task on their return to the top flight, but they bowled well with Maurice Chambers taking 2-52 as they restricted the champions to 265 for five.

Keaton Jennings and Michael Richardson both made half-centuries for Durham but their hopes for a big first-innings total will largely rest with Phil Mustard, who had advanced to 63 not out at stumps.

Paul Collingwood decided to post a total after winning the toss but his side lost Mark Stoneman early as Muhammad Azhar Ullah got one to nip back and remove the opener.

Jennings then survived a scare as his top edge looped up but could not be gathered by a fielder and Durham were soon two down when Andrew Hall trapped Scott Borthwick lbw for 20.

Durham negotiated their way to lunch with no further losses, and Richardson hit Hall for six after the break as he and Jennings put on 82 for the third wicket.

Jennings had moved to 54 when he became the next man to fall, caught at first slip by Hall off Chambers.

That brought Mustard to the crease and he and Richardson built another useful partnership as they put on 95 and guided their team into the evening session.

But Richardson was gone for 80 when he got a bottom edge on a James Middlebrook delivery and it went through to wicketkeeper David Murphy.

Collingwood went shortly after when he edged Chambers to Matthew Spriegel at third slip but Mustard and Gareth Breese, on 28 not out, guided Durham safely to the close.
