Will Tavare, the nephew of former England batsman Chris, has signed a contract with Gloucestershire for 2014.
The 23-year-old batsman enjoyed a successful season with Gloucestershire’s second XI this year and will spend the winter in Melbourne before linking up with his new team-mates next March.
“Will has been our leading run-scorer in second XI cricket and is a player we have helped develop at the same time as he has been helping himself,” said Gloucestershire director of cricket John Bracewell.
“He is a top-order batsman, who deserves the opportunity to move up and provide extra competition for our batting places. We need three openers in our squad and Will's signing to join Michael Klinger and Chris Dent in the squad means that is the case.”
Tavare has previously played five first-class matches for Loughborough MCCU, averaging 32 with the bat. He plundered almost 1,000 runs for Gloucestershire’s Second XI in 2013, aided by three centuries.
