Jaques shines in stalemate

Watch highlights of day four

Phil Jaques impressed with his maiden century for Nottinghamshire but it was not enough to force a win as the LV= County Championship Division One match against Somerset petered out into a draw.

The 35-year-old opener, who joined Nottinghamshire over the winter, finished unbeaten on 150 as the visitors made 322 for four declared in their second innings on a day that saw just two wickets fall following a rain-affected start in Taunton.

Samit Patel added a half-century to his first-innings 132, and Riki Wessels’ 40 saw out proceedings alongside Jaques in an unbroken 106-run partnership.

Their efforts had helped Nottinghamshire build a lead of 360 on the final day, but the chance of a positive result had long since gone as bat largely dominated ball again at the County Ground, with the players shaking hands on a draw that leaves both teams with 12 points from the game.

Nottinghamshire began the day on 97 for two and leading by 135, with Jaques on 55 - his second half-century of the match - and James Taylor also at the crease.

Taylor only managed to add four runs to his overnight single before he was snared lbw by Alfonso Thomas in just the second over.

However, that was the only breakthrough Somerset could manage during a morning session that was interrupted by rain and brought about an early lunch with the visitors 151 for three.

The possibility of an early declaration and a potential run-chase was raised as Patel and Jaques pressed the accelerator during a rapid fourth-wicket partnership worth 113.

Patel was especially aggressive, scoring 75 off 83 with 12 fours, but his stay ended when he was bowled by Johann Myburgh and after that Nottinghamshire opted to bat out the rest of the day.

Jaques survived a scare as he neared three figures, dropped by wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter when on 88, but the Australian was not to be denied and he completed his hundred off 186 balls.

The visitors continued to pile on the runs after that as the Somerset attack struggled to make much of an impact on the flat wicket, and soon after Jaques brought up his 150 - which included 17 fours - the sides decided enough was enough and called an end to the match.
