Magoffin sends Sussex to summit

Steve Magoffin took his tally of victims in two LV= County Championship games against Somerset this season to 20 as Sussex completed an emphatic nine-wicket win inside three days to go top of Division One.

It took the visitors just 22 minutes to polish off the last three wickets at Taunton as Somerset were bowled out for 209 in their second innings, Magoffin taking two for figures of 4-36.

That gave the 33-year-old Queenslander a match tally of 8-101 to follow the amazing 12-31 he claimed in the reverse fixture at Horsham in May.

A victory target of 91 was never likely to test Sussex, who eased to victory in 19.4 overs before lunch, Chris Nash leading the way with an unbeaten 61.

Somerset, facing a relegation battle following their second-placed finish last summer, took only four points from the match, while Sussex boosted their title challenge with 23.

Any hopes the hosts had of turning the game around from an overnight position of 197 for seven - 78 runs ahead - were dented with the fifth ball of the day as Alfonso Thomas chipped Magoffin to short mid-on.

Everything then rested on Peter Trego. But, having moved to 16, the powerful all-rounder edged an attempted cut off Chris Jordan and gave wicketkeeper Ben Brown his ninth catch of the match.

Last pair Steve Kirby and Jamie Overton were able to add only three before the latter was bowled by Magoffin and spectators in the sparse crowd resigned themselves to a short day.

Sussex only needed to make a solid start to clinch victory. They were given that by openers Nash and Luke Wells, who took the total to 40 inside nine overs before the latter was caught at third slip off Kirby.

First-innings centurion Michael Yardy and Nash, who captained the side over the first two days in the absence of Ed Joyce, saw Sussex to their target.

Joyce and Somerset spinner George Dockrell joined the game today after international duty with Ireland, nominated players Matt Machan and Craig Meschede dropping out.

Joyce did not bat while there was only the ignominy of being hit for two straight sixes by Nash for Dockrell, the second to finish the game.
