Surrey have signed Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell as an overseas player for this summer’s Friends Life t20.
The 24-year-old has played two Tests, but is more renowned for his performances in the limited-overs formats. He currently boasts 11 ODI and nine T20 caps.
A powerful striker of the ball, canny off-spinner and athletic fielder, Maxwell represented Hampshire in last year’s FLt20 and has also featured in the Indian Premier League in addition to Australia’s Big Bash League.
He is scheduled to play Surrey’s first seven South Group games at this stage. His participation in the latter stages of the tournament will depend on international commitments with Australia A.
He said: “I’m thrilled about this opportunity and really looking forward to joining Surrey for the T20 competition. Hopefully we will enjoy some great success as a team.”
Surrey team director Chris Adams added: “Glenn is one of the most exciting T20 players in the world and we are looking forward to him joining our squad for this year’s competition.
“As a big-hitting all rounder and strong fielder he will be able to contribute in all facets of the game and certainly has the potential to provide a key performance.”
Maxwell's countryman Ricky Ponting will be Surrey's other overseas player in the T20 competition.
