Northants snap up Butler and Wagner

Northamptonshire have finally ended their search for overseas recruits by announcing the signings of New Zealand pair Neil Wagner and Ian Butler.

Seamer Butler, who has represented his country in eight Tests, 26 one-day internationals and 19 Twenty20s, has previous experience of county cricket with Gloucestershire and Nottinghamshire and the 32-year-old is set to play in all forms of the game until late July.

Left-arm paceman Wagner will arrive at Wantage Road following the Black Caps’ tour of the West Indies and is available for the county’s final five LV= County Championship Division One matches.

The 28-year-old has taken 50 wickets in 14 Tests for New Zealand.

The double swoop comes as a relief to Northants, who had been frustrated in their attempts to bolster their bowling department with an overseas player.

Firstly Australian Jackson Bird and then South African Rory Kleinveldt had to pull out of their contracts due to their respective back and knee injuries.
