Patel and Gordon steer Warwickshire to victory

Watch highlights of the final day's play

Jeetan Patel and Recordo Gordon took four wickets each as Warwickshire kept their LV= County Championship title hopes alive with a 215-run win over Somerset at Taunton.

Experienced off-spinner Patel finished with 4-64 and match figures of 8-145 after helping to bowl out the hosts for 188 in their second innings, Peter Trego top-scoring with 42 in a poor final-day batting effort.

Gordon claimed 4-53 as Warwickshire took 23 points to leapfrog their opponents into third place in the Division One table.

For Somerset, defeat and only five points appeared to spell the end of their aspirations of lifting the title for the first time.

Resuming their second innings on one without loss at the start of the day, Somerset soon plunged to 33 for three.

Skipper Marcus Trescothick took 39 balls to get off the mark and managed just one scoring stroke before falling lbw for four in Patel’s first over.

Johann Myburgh had moved to 23 when pushing forward to Oliver Hannon-Dalby and edging through to wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose. In the same over, and without a run added, young Tom Abell was bowled off stump shouldering arms.

Nick Compton and James Hildreth took the score to 83 for three at lunch.

But, with a tough afternoon session ahead, Hildreth, on 26, somehow contrived to hit a catch to mid-on off Patel from the first ball he received after the interval.

It was bad error from such an experienced batsman and soon Somerset were 94 for five.

Compton, having made 24, was brilliantly caught on the deep square-leg boundary off Gordon, Jonathan Trott leaping to parry the ball above his head and managing to avoid the rope as he pouched it at the second attempt.

Alex Barrow looked in good form when helping Trego take the total to 142 before he was picked up at slip, driving at Patel, for 29.

Craig Overton was then caught behind down the leg side off Gordon for nine and at tea Somerset were 172 for seven, with 36 overs still to survive.

The final session saw Lewis Gregory edge Gordon through to Ambrose and Alfonso Thomas walked out with more than 33 overs left. He made only two before being bowled having a swing at Patel.

The end came when Trego, who had shown more application than most, lofted another boundary catch to Trott, sparking celebrations among an injury-hit Warwickshire side.
