Rain denies Cook and Carberry

Rain stopped England opening batsmen Alastair Cook and Michael Carberry from adding to their triple-century stand on day two of four against Australia A at Hobart’s Bellerive Oval.

Cook and Carberry, who have scored 154 and 153 respectively, skilfully batted throughout yesterday as the tourists closed on 318 without loss after winning the toss.

However, further progress today was not possible as forecast rain swept in.

There was no sign of a clearance in the weather as the scheduled lunch break approached.

Bad weather persisted into the afternoon, and umpires Simon Fry and Paul Wilson opted to take tea at 2.40pm local time and then inspect at 3pm.

After more rain, the umpires decided there would be one last chance to get play under way - with a 4pm inspection - but the run-up area at the Southern End was deemed too wet.

Tomorrow’s scheduled start time is 9.30am, half an hour earlier than on the first two days.
