Rain ruins Durham's plans

Durham were frustrated by the weather as they attempted to push home their advantage over Somerset at the Emirates Durham ICG.

Day three of the LV= County Championship match was abandoned without a ball being bowled as rain and bad light combined to thwart the home side, who had ended the second day with a lead of 275 runs and three wickets remaining.

However, with better conditions forecast for tomorrow, Durham coach Jon Lewis is confident there is still enough time for his men to clinch victory.

He said: "It's disappointing, obviously. It's been a pretty grim and miserable day and there have been some bored cricketers, which is never good.

"But it's not too bad; there's still enough time in the game. The game had moved forward pretty quickly in the first two days - 17 wickets on day two obviously took the game forward even more so - so with 96 overs tomorrow, 270 ahead as we are, we are still pretty optimistic there's enough time to win the game."

Lewis also remains hopeful of making a breakthrough in his pursuit of Sri Lanka star Kumar Sangakkara.

The county champions have been in negotiations with the 36-year-old over a short-term deal for some time, and Lewis is keeping his fingers crossed that an agreement which could see the wicketkeeper-batsman play in two championship fixtures can be struck.

Lewis said: "Basically it has been holiday-time in Sri Lanka for the last 10 days and nothing has shifted, but they are back to work today.

"We would love it to happen. He's obviously a fine player. I don't think we need a lift as such, it's just a bit of a boost to have a player of that quality come in, even if it was for a short period of time.

"If it doesn't happen, we have tried; but if it does, it would be nice."
