Root soars into top 10 of ICC rankings

By Will Jackson

Joe Root has broken into the top 10 of the Test batting rankings for the first time following England's 3-1 series win again India.

The Yorkshireman's unbeaten 149, his fifth century in Test cricket, sees him rise five places into ninth in the table while Gary Ballance also a acheived a career-high.

It marks a significant summer for Root, who has bounced back from the disappointment of the Ashes in remarkable style.

Root had entered the series against India in 26th position on 610 ratings points. In seven innings, he amassed 518 runs with two centuries and three half-centuries. The Yorkshireman consequently finished in ninth position and on 789 ratings points, thus gaining 17 places and 179 points.

Ballance, meanwhile, finished in 24th after rising four places as a result of his innings 64 at the Kia Oval.

Alastair Cook's recent good form continued in the fifth Test, and his half-century helped him jump four places into 21st to give secure a slender lead over Ballance.

In the bowling rankings, Stuart Broad moved up one more spot into eighth, but it was Chris Jordan who was the biggest mover.

The England all-rounder took four second-innings wickets and moves into 59th, a rise of 36.

In the team rankings, England leapfrogged India and Pakistan to move third in the world, behind South Africa and Australia, while the Sri Lanka side that was victorious in England earlier in the summer are hot on their heels in fifth.
