Samuels ton not enough for Windies

Marlon Samuels’ superb hundred proved in vain as Pakistan overcame West Indies by six wickets on the Duckworth/Lewis method in St Lucia to move 2-1 up in their five-match series with one game to play.

A game initially reduced to 49 overs a side by poor weather appeared to be heading in the Windies’ favour prior to a rain delay that lopped a further 18 overs from Pakistan’s innings.

Samuels’ acceleration to 106 not out from 104 deliveries underpinned a home total of 261 for seven and Pakistan were struggling on 78 for two from 17 overs when the heavens opened.

However, the tourists seized control once they resumed in pursuit of a revised target of 189 in 31 overs.

Mohammad Hafeez reached 59 before skipper Misbah-ul-Haq and Umar Akmal finished things off with respective unbeaten scores of 53 and 29, the latter’s innings spanning just 18 balls and ushering in victory with six deliveries unused.

Samuels shared 57 with Chris Gayle, surprisingly demoted to five, and 95 with Lendl Simmons, the next highest scorer for West Indies with 46.

Yet although West Indies’ centurion claimed the match award courtesy of an innings containing nine fours and four sixes, he still ended up on the losing side.

That was largely down to the composure of Misbah and Umar, who shared 45 in 4.4 overs after Shahid Afridi had departed cheaply.
