Essex have announced that Greg Smith has signed a new two-year deal with the club.
The 30-year-old will remain with the county until the end of the 2015 campaign.
South African Smith battled back from a hip injury that disrupted his pre-season to score 555 runs in 11 first-class outings with a further 479 in one-day cricket.
“I am delighted to have extended my stay at Essex Cricket and look forward to building on my performances last season," said Smith.
"Hopefully I can bring some silverware to the club.”
Head coach Paul Grayson added: “I am absolutely delighted he has committed to the club for the next two years.
"He has been the most consistent performer in all competitions since the start of the Twenty20 and has made match winning contributions for the team. He will take the confidence in his game from this year in to next.”
