Somerset frustrated by rain

Somerset's solid response to Nottinghamshire's 378 was halted by rain as only 37 overs were possible on day two of the LV= County Championship Division One clash at Taunton.

The hosts had moved to 70 for one, 308 in arrears, when the heavens opened for the second time midway through the afternoon session. Play would not restart, with umpires Steven Garratt and Tim Robinson calling stumps at 4pm.

Earlier, Nottinghamshire added 71 to their overnight total in 10 overs thanks to some lusty hitting from Luke Fletcher and Harry Gurney, who struck 58 and 22 not out respectively.

In the two periods that Somerset batted, they were steered by Chris Jones and Nick Compton - who ended unbeaten on 37 and 31 respectively.

Nottinghamshire resumed their first innings on 327 for eight and lost Ajmal Shahzad without addition to his overnight 35, bowled by Peter Trego shouldering arms.

Gurney joined Fletcher, who - having resumed on 30 - was dropped almost immediately at long-leg. And he made Somerset pay for the mistake as he added 51 for the last wicket, before being caught by wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter trying to hook Jamie Overton.

Notts started impressively with the ball, Marcus Trescothick scoring the first run following four successive maidens. Shortly afterwards he edged Gurney to third slip as the visitors continued to prosper.

After rain caused an early lunch and the loss of 12 overs, Jones and Compton saw off the new ball and began to play with confidence.

The introduction of left-arm spinner Samit Patel almost reaped an instant reward, but James Taylor shelled a sharp chance off Jones at forward short-leg.

That would prove the last dramatic moment of the day as inclement weather curtailed proceedings.
