Essex have confirmed Ryan ten Doeschate will join up with New Zealand outfit Otago Volts prior to the conclusion of the English domestic season.
Otago are participating in the Champions League T20, which began in India today.
With Ravi Bopara back from international duty with England and Tom Westley available again following a finger injury, Essex are willing to let ten Doeschate leave before their LV= County Championship season is over.
Head coach Paul Grayson explained: “Ryan came and saw me to see about the possibility of ending his season with Essex a couple of games early to go and play Twenty20 cricket for Otago in a massive competition.
“After discussions with the club's cricket committee, we decided to allow this to happen because we now have two quality batsmen to come in and replace him in Bopara and Westley. We wish Ryan the best of luck in the competition.”
Essex currently sit 21 points behind second-placed Northamptonshire in Division Two.
Ten Doeschate added: “I'm excited to be playing in the Champions League and the chance to play came about due to the return of Ravi to the side as well as the small chance of getting promoted.
“The batsmen have done well, which has allowed me to leave and allow the team to complete the remaining games of the season with a settled batting line-up. I will be following the scores closely and hopefully we can still have that chance going into the final match of getting promotion.”
