MCC Young Cricketers (YCs) have announced the signing of all-rounder Janak Valand.
The Leicester Ivanhoe off-spin bowler and middle-order batsman impressed during the 2013 Lord’s Taverners City Cup.
The competition promotes inner-city cricket and social cohesion, and has been staged in London under the auspices of Middlesex County Cricket Club since 2009.
For the third consecutive year the YCs have offered a contract to the top performing player in the competition.
Valand follows in the footsteps of 2011 star Dipayan Paul and Zain Shahzad, who impressed in 2012.
MCC head coach Mark Alleyne said: “Janak has shown great promise throughout the Lord’s Taverners City Cup competition this season, and really stood out at the training weekend that I delivered for the top 15 LTCC cricketers at the end of the summer.
“He bowls with a great rev count – really turning the ball - and his batting is very positive, showing a good intent to score runs. I’m really looking forward to working with him next year, as he makes the next step in his cricketing development.
“It has been an excellent season for the YCs, with five of the guys signing professional contracts with counties for next year.
"This is exactly what the scheme is there to do, and I’m sure that Janak and the rest of the 2014 YCs intake will be hoping to follow in their footsteps.”
