Rain hampered Cumberland’s attempts to retain the MCCA Trophy as their group game with Cheshire at Kendal yesterday was abandoned without a ball bowled.
Cambridgeshire - whom Cumberland beat in the champions’ other Trophy match this year - took advantage to go top of Group Three by defeating Northumberland at at The Leys School. Joe Coyne’s 68 lifted the visitors to 198 all out but Alan Burton’s unbeaten 65 aided victory with 3.1 of the available 50 overs to spare.
Hertfordshire moved level on points at the top of Group One with yesterday’s opponents Oxfordshire thanks to a seven-wicket win at Radlett. Tons from Kabir Toor and Eddie Ballard, the latter’s unbeaten, saw the hosts reach a target of 263 with seven deliveries remaining.
Also in Group One Devon beat neighbours Cornwall by 66 runs at Redruth thanks chiefly James Burke’s 84, which aided a total of 193 for four.
In Group Two Norfolk moved second behind Shropshire by defeating Lincolnshire at Manor Park. Conrad Louth’s 53 could not prevent a seven-run loss after Norfolk posted 165 for nine.
In the same pool Suffolk earned their first Trophy triumph of 2013, a 94-run thrashing of Wiltshire at Devizes where Tom Rash was unbeaten on 53 for the victors before taking 3-15.
Wales Minor Counties made if four Group Four wins from four in defeating Buckinghamshire by three wickets at Dinton Cricket Club despite 67 not out from Christopher Thomas.
Berkshire got off the mark with a 76-run victory over winless Staffordshire at Himley CC thanks in part to Shelvin Gumbs top-scoring with 78.
