White Ferns scrape opening win

New Zealand gained their first victory in the Women’s Twenty20 Tri-Series in Barbados, narrowly beating West Indies by nine runs.

The White Ferns and England, who meet tomorrow in the penultimate round-robin game, have one win each while the hosts have two, making them favourites to reach October 26’s final.

New Zealand’s victory hopes looked slim when they posted 101 for seven after winning the toss, Rachel Priest top-scoring with 26.

However, the Windies, whose innings was interrupted by rain at 53 for two in the 12th over, slumped to 92 for eight from their 20 overs.
