White Rose battle hard at Headingley

Watch highlights of day one

Yorkshire were grateful for Tim Bresnan's lower-order runs to ensure England colleague Joe Root's good start was not wasted on day one of their LV= County Championship clash against Warwickshire.

Root made 69 and put on 91 with opening partner Adam Lyth, but the White Rose slipped to 181 for six before Bresnan and Kane Williamson, who made 61 and 75 respectively, added 113 for the seventh wicket.

Keith Barker and Chris Woakes took three wickets apiece for leaders Warwickshire, who from 310 for eight will hope to wrap the innings up quickly tomorrow having won the toss at Headingley.

They would have spent much of the morning questioning that decision as Lyth and Root made solid progress either side of a short rain break.

The first seven overs brought 38 runs before the weather gave the visitors some respite, and Yorkshire's half-century came up in the 12th and was immediately followed by Root's seventh boundary.

The England international reached a 59-ball half-century, featuring nine fours in total, before Lyth mis-timed a pull at Woakes' fourth delivery and contrived to swat it straight back for a return catch.

It was 105 for one at lunch, with Root on 67, but he barely added to that tally before he too lost his wicket to a loose stroke, chopping on when trying to cut Barker.

Captain Andrew Gale went in similar fashion to a Woakes delivery which possibly kept low, and Gary Ballance needed treatment after he was struck on the elbow by Woakes before falling lbw to Barker for four.

That was 137 for four, with Williamson on only 13 having seen three partners depart, and he received only limited support from Jonny Bairstow as well.

The pair put on 22 before Bairstow played across the line at a full delivery from Chris Wright and was bowled for 15.

Wright struck again to have Adil Rashid caught at second slip by Will Porterfield - but that brought Bresnan to the wicket, and the Tykes began to rebuild.

The all-rounder dominated the early scoring in his partnership with Williamson, who was allowed to progress unobtrusively towards 50.

The New Zealander took Barker for two and four in successive balls to bring up a 123-ball half-century and also the fifty partnership with Bresnan, who had contributed 32.

He then hoisted international team-mate Jeetan Patel for six before Bresnan reached a half-century from 94 balls with a single off Richard Jones.

Barker, with figures of 3-69, ended a crucial partnership when he pinned Williamson lbw, the right-hander having faced 184 balls and hit six fours and a six.

Woakes, who took 3-43, ripped out Bresnan in the next over and it was left to Liam Plunkett and Steven Patterson to see out the last six.
